December 19, 2008 – Editorial Cartoon Friday!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Dec.20, 2008, under Editorials, What's New?
The elves go in business for themselves. Look out! A nod to a metaphor to what I’m concerned is happening with these bailouts. It’s happened many times before. Most notably in the ’20s and as proceeded the savings and loan disaster.
December 19, 2008 – Books-Palm Beach!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Dec.19, 2008, under Books, Florida History!
My journey through Palm Beach continues. I was going to jump back into fiction with three Lawrence Sanders. After finishing one of his McNally series set in Palm Beach, I was back in non-fiction again. I always thought the McNally series was a throw back to another time in how it depicts the time period Archie Mcnally dwells. Nah, it apparently is how it was and as it it. Like new York City, Palm Beach has a mond set of the past and hardly willing to proceed to the future.
‘The Season’ and ‘Palm Beach Babylon’ both came out in the ’90s and cover the various scandals of the 12 mile stretch strip of land. ‘The Season’ is one person’s account of what he saw and what he was told. The ‘Babylon’ book recounts generous amounts of historical vignettes over a hundred year period. Both are good reads as each has well written perspectives. However, both are bitter-sweet in that so much told is sad with sad wayward people like Addison Mizner, Joe Kennedy, Roxanne Pulitzer and Donald Trump.
December 17, 2008 – Orlando Remembered & Lunch!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Dec.18, 2008, under Florida Restaurants, Friends, What's New?
Sandra and I attended the annual Christmas gathering of Orlando Remembered at the Citrus Club in Orlando. I was, as always, a great meeting! Our Chairman, Robert Serros also recognized that a year had passed since the passing of his brother and the heart and soul of Orlando Remembered, Andy Serros. Above are sketches of three attending: Jack Kazanzas, Charles Gray and Elaine Pancake.
Later we joined friends G.K. Sharman and James Saunders for lunch in Longwood at Mona Lisa in the Longwood Village in Seminole County. That’s Mr. Saunders to the left that I sketched quickly in the parking lot.

I was Andy Thornal’s Outfitters in Winter Haven to sign books with author, Rick Dantzler, above signing. Rick’s new book is ‘Gators vs. Bulldogs’. I usually don’t just sign but add an illustration, too. Such as the photos above, right and below.
Later guess what I did in Lakeland?

December 6, 2008 – Drawing in the Christmas Parade!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Dec.06, 2008, under Florida Outdoors!, Sandra, What's New?
Above are sketches drawn while walking in the Ocala Christmas Parade. I thought I would challenge myself by sketching as I walked the three miles in the dark of what I saw from the parade route. I had to draw QUICK!
Sandra and I found ourselves walking with the Republican Federated Women float. Odd for Sandra to do in that she’s a Democrat. She went along because neice Amber was one of the children riding in the small float. Amber is in red in the photo below. Below are photos of the float.
The various floats line up for action in the nighttime parade.

by Rob Smith, Jr. on Dec.04, 2008, under Caricatures, Cartooning, What's New?
After completing a caricature in Orlando I headed to Ocala to work on the float for the Republican Federated Women’s group. I wanted to be involved earlier, but the cold a couple weeks ago severly messed up my schedule from the float to my annual Christmas card.

Above and below are photos of the faux book I created. I expected this to take me 12 or more hours. Being out of time I somehow pushed this out in three hours. I still had an editorial cartoon to scan in and color. I didn’t finish the cartoon until the wee hours of Friday. That messed with the ability to get it to Glenn’s site in time. For some reason I decided to get a bit more complicated with color with an already complicated cartoon. I ended up spending more time coloring the cartoon than making the art in the photos shown here. By the way that’s Ann Archer standing by the giant “book”.
