#INKtober #10 – Birthday Greetings!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Oct.10, 2016, under Cartooning
Turn to birthday greetings for INKtober #10! October 10th is my friend Patty Thielen Register‘s birthday. She and her husband run the wonderful Gatorama and Crocodile Adventures way down in Palmdale, Florida, where you can see all kinds of alligators and all kinds of other critters. Well worth the trip!
The other birthday is of Chris Chan who does an incredible impression Barry Manilow. He is a consummate performer from putting together an event, piano playing and so much more! You can learn more here: Chris Chan’s Musical Tribute to Barry Manilow.
Put both Patty and Chris in a Birthday Blender and there’s Okee, the Gatorama gator, doing his disco turn of Barry Manilow. On stage Live! ๐

#INKtober #7 – Birthday Foursome!
Yesterday it came to me I could use some of these INKtober inked works to celebrate birthdays. Today there are four I could link together! All about education and reading. Here are four that try to get those ideas out to all.
I recall speaking with birthday girl June Cochran about the importance of learning and reading and wishing more would do that. Birthday boy Randy Osborne spends an enormous amount of time working politically toward better education for our little people here in Florida and nationally. For a few decades birthday boy Phillip Dana Yeh has traveled all over the US and other parts of the world encouraging reading and learning through organizations like his ‘Cartoonists across America & the World’. I am so glad to have worked with both Randy & Phil toward their goals. Howard Victor Chaykin, who also celebrates a birthday today, is a legendary comic book illustrator I’m proud to have original art of. Comic books have long been an entry for young people to read their whole lives. I am an example of that. ๐
Happy Birthday wishes to all four!!!
I know the art should only only be ink. I touched a bit of color for clarity and to add color to how Phil would use paintings to get his point across.
Tomorrow’s INKtober entry will come late from Georgia!
#INKtober #6 – Birthday Greetings! – October 6th, 2016

#Inktober #6
Was going to post work I’m doing until I saw a couple of birthdays. Suddenly occurred to me I could post birthday greetings here with inked art.
Since I’m a kitty person, it was fun drawing a kitty wishing my friend Trisha Kirby Happy Birthday! Seeing it’s also Mimi Wells birthday, I stick the kitty in a costume reminiscent of Gilbert & Sullivan and put the kitty on stage. Mimi, who I know by another name, was one of the funniest people in high school and also did a play or two.
I’ll add my computer has been out for a few days and am trying to post this via an iPhone.
Already did a birthday drawing for tomorrow. Found 4 friends having birthdays Friday with similarities! ๐

My #Inktober #1 – October 1st, 2016
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Oct.01, 2016, under Cartooning, Sketchbook
Here’s my 1st contribution to the month long #Inktober2016. Since My volunteering at the Florida Springs Restoration Summit 2016 as part of the Silver Springs Alliance gave me a chance to sketch a bit and did a “signing” of one of my Swampy books – An otter along the waters of Lake Okeechobee.
The sketches are of, clockwise from left, Congresswoman Gwen Graham speaking to crowd, Clay Henderson using technology, Dr. Bob Knight and Richard (Whitey) Markle strumming his gee-tar. White also is running for a tiny office in Marion County for Soil & Water Conservation and I recommend a vote for him! The other fellow doesn’t know his soil from a conservation. ๐
Been sick all week and this was my first outing. When I saw Cedric Hohnstadt‘s reminder of #Inktober starting today, i thought I’d just do a sketch or two. During the event, I started feeling even better did many pages of sketches & sketched this drawing inside one of my Swampy books for a new friend that just might give a hand in a nifty project I’ve wanted to do for many years.

Navigating a year of all sorts of difficulties, I caught up on a bunch of projects in August so i could concentrate on 4 Swampy books in September. Two got delayed after my father’s death. I’ll post various stages of the various pages of the various books here. Here are two roughed pages for a book of the Fisher House (A place to stay for military service families) at Eglin Air Force Base near Pensacola.

My newest illustration: Fun with Dick van Dyke! – September 9th, 2016
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Sep.09, 2016, under Caricatures, Cartooning, Celebrity Illustrations
Here’s my painted watercolor version of the little boy and Dick van Dyke and a penguin.
This is for the family of the little boy they have adopted. The couple was fostering the child due to the actual parent’s drug issues. The child became available for adoption and the two 57 year olds decided to start a new life with a young one. This is for a celebration party for the adoption.
This was done with watercolor on board. Had a lot of trouble with the stripes and wish I’d used color pencil to mark them.
