From my sketchbook 10 years ago….
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Aug.21, 2023, under Sketchbook
Ten years ago today I was part of a group of folks discussing issues and philosophy. It was a Socrates Cafe.
I’d take a sketch pad page and doodle the back and forth of members, including me.
I love being a part of discussion groups.

My #Inktober #1 – October 1st, 2016
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Oct.01, 2016, under Cartooning, Sketchbook
Here’s my 1st contribution to the month long #Inktober2016. Since My volunteering at the Florida Springs Restoration Summit 2016 as part of the Silver Springs Alliance gave me a chance to sketch a bit and did a “signing” of one of my Swampy books – An otter along the waters of Lake Okeechobee.
The sketches are of, clockwise from left, Congresswoman Gwen Graham speaking to crowd, Clay Henderson using technology, Dr. Bob Knight and Richard (Whitey) Markle strumming his gee-tar. White also is running for a tiny office in Marion County for Soil & Water Conservation and I recommend a vote for him! The other fellow doesn’t know his soil from a conservation. 😀
Been sick all week and this was my first outing. When I saw Cedric Hohnstadt‘s reminder of #Inktober starting today, i thought I’d just do a sketch or two. During the event, I started feeling even better did many pages of sketches & sketched this drawing inside one of my Swampy books for a new friend that just might give a hand in a nifty project I’ve wanted to do for many years.
A Trail of Two Churches! – April 24th, 2016
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Apr.24, 2016, under Sketchbook, Swampy's Florida
Before and after the bit o’ hiking I did at Upper Tampa Bay Park I was doing some Swampy’s Florida #Sunday Service visits.
The first was a visit with the friends I was staying with this past weekend. Sandy Rhodes Huff & her husband Bill attend Heritage United Methodist Church in Clearwater. Bill was singing with the church quartet. Thanks to them for their hospitality again and cheers to Bill for a great performance. The first sketch is of the pastor done from the back of the room, as usual.
After the hike a run to Ocala for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Mt. Zion AME Church. Got a lot more sketching done and learned lots about the church. More over at Swampy’s Florida. The rest of the sketches are from that visit. Bit of a handicap here as I left my glasses in the automobile and I was in back of the room.
A more than full day and I’m fully pooped!

by Rob Smith, Jr. on Apr.11, 2016, under Sketchbook
Doing some historic research for my Swampy’s Florida. Stopped at a historic church in Quincy, Florida, the 1833 established First Presbyterian Church of Quincy, Florida. Did a bit of sketching while there. You can a bit more now and still more later at Swampy’s Florida, about the church.
July 10th, 2014: Today on the drawing board- Central Florida Expressway Sketches.
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jul.12, 2014, under Sketchbook
I attended the first meeting of the new Central Florida Expressway board meeting this morning. The organization previously had been racked by scandal and accusations. This new board for the toll roads in Central Florida will hold sway of toll roads and soon-to-be-toll roads in four counties- Orange, Seminole, Lake and Osceola. Members of the board acknowledged to previous problems and sought not to repeat them.
It was a standing room only room. Seemed it was mostly filled with road builders and contractors. The fellow who oversees construction of the organizations roads was kind enough to get me a chair, after standing for a good part of the meeting. Once seated, i pulled out the sketchbook and doodled the above and another page of sketches.
November 8th, 2013 – #Dailyinks #7 – Bird is the Word
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Nov.08, 2013, under Cartooning, Sketchbook
Been going back and forth with these birds. Finally put some ink on them during a Silver Springs Advisory Committee meeting this morning in Ocala. There happened to be am Audubon Society leader there who i got to consult with about the birds. She approved. I’ll stop going back and forth with them. This inked version stays.
November 7th, 2013 – #Dailyinks #6 – Deer, Drawing the Moving Target!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Nov.07, 2013, under Illusration, Sketchbook
Was at Ocali Days today helping man the Marion County Museum of History booth. The event continues through Sunday at Silver Springs State Park.
After the event I hit the swamp hiking trail in the park and made my way to the connecting Silver River. I made a video, which I will feature separately. As I finished the video Scott Mitchell, Silver River Museum Director, was coming up with a group to take a boat ride on the Silver River to the head springs of the river.
After teh boat ride we all jumped in a trailer to be taken back to the main park. It was late, we traveled slow and discovered deer along the way. i decided to put ink pen to paper and whipped out these nearly contour drawings of various deer we saw. Drawing while the vehicle and the deer were in motion was a challenge!!!

by Rob Smith, Jr. on Oct.22, 2013, under Sketchbook
Attended a political meeting near Interlachen, Florida, at Backwoods Smokehouse and sketched these folks. I was there to support Thuy Lowe, who is running for Congress and graduated with my sister in high school.
