Saying Goodbye to a Friend – May 23rd, 2017
by Rob Smith, Jr. on May.24, 2017, under Buddies, Friends, Swampy's Florida
I’m temporarily grounded as my brakes in the car have decided not to operate as they should. This meant on Tuesday I needed a ride to a memorial service for a friend. Maxine Thomas was kind to give me that ride out to Dunnellon to say goodbye to our mutual friend Penny Fleeger. The service was held at a favorite spot of Penny’s, Rainbow Springs State Park (Photo above).
Penny was born and raised in the same city my mother and aunt were born and raised, Coral Gables, Florida. It was one evening Penny and I were talking about Coral Gables and high school. Suddenly we found that Penny went to elementary, junior high, high school AND the same college with my Aunt, though they didn’t really know each other.
Penny moved on from Coral Gables to other places, married and ended up in Dunnellon, Florida. Widowed and wanting to help the community, she was voted in as a Dunnellon City Council member. She also got involved with the local historical museum, the Chamber of Commerce and helping preserve the Rainbow River, which she lived along.
I met her several years ago and we were very good friends until the her health took her. Penny loved everything that drove my Swampy’s Florida efforts. It was Penny’s efforts that produced the ‘Swampy’s Florida: Dunnellon’ book.
Penny’s gone now. In a place she can rest from the maddening crowd – One of her favorite places – the Rainbow River.
Favorites I met at the Florida SpringsFest! – March 4th, 2017
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.04, 2017, under Cartooning, Swampy's Florida
My favorites I met Saturday at the Florida SpringsFest : These two little girls who took special sessions with the National Park Service to become National Park Service Junior Rangers. They carry with them their studies over the past few months and sport special badges proclaiming their achievements involving the Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, Big Talbot Island State Park & Timucuan Ecological & Historic Preserve! That’s how to educate our young to appreciate our incredible history, heritage and culture of the great state of #Florida!!!

by Rob Smith, Jr. on Nov.25, 2016, under Swampy's Florida
Been working away on my Swampy’s Florida books all week while also trying to stop a cold. The last couple of days have been real trying, but I’m hoping the cold will calm this weekend. The cold has managed to slow me down quite a bit and I’m filling wastebaskets with tissues.
The goal is to complete two of the books to a point before returning to working on my annual Christmas card. the clock is ticking! 🙂

A Trail of Two Churches! – April 24th, 2016
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Apr.24, 2016, under Sketchbook, Swampy's Florida
Before and after the bit o’ hiking I did at Upper Tampa Bay Park I was doing some Swampy’s Florida #Sunday Service visits.
The first was a visit with the friends I was staying with this past weekend. Sandy Rhodes Huff & her husband Bill attend Heritage United Methodist Church in Clearwater. Bill was singing with the church quartet. Thanks to them for their hospitality again and cheers to Bill for a great performance. The first sketch is of the pastor done from the back of the room, as usual.
After the hike a run to Ocala for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Mt. Zion AME Church. Got a lot more sketching done and learned lots about the church. More over at Swampy’s Florida. The rest of the sketches are from that visit. Bit of a handicap here as I left my glasses in the automobile and I was in back of the room.
A more than full day and I’m fully pooped!
