My Snoopy’s birthday card from Florida….

by on Aug.10, 2023, under Cartooning

In 2015 cartoonists drew cartoons to celebrate the  in celebration of Snoopy’s birthday. I thought I’d participate and add a Florida twist.
If you don’t know, this is typically how everyone is welcomed to Florida!

Comic Pages I was working on a year ago….

by on Aug.08, 2023, under Cartooning

2 years ago I inked these pages for the Swampy’s Florida book, ‘Ross Allen’.
This was printed as a 20 page book 6 months later.

I’m in the process of producing an expanded version that should be available by the first of 2024.

My Book Reviews: ‘Kodocha: Sana’s Stage’, Vol. 01 by Miho Obana.

by on Aug.06, 2023, under Books, Cartooning

Kodocha: Sana's Stage, Vol. 01Kodocha: Sana’s Stage, Vol. 01 by Miho Obana
My rating: 1 of 5 stars

Note: As I continue to create comics, I’m trying to slip in comic trade paperback material.

This is such simplistic, poorly rendered, plotted and laid out book, that I wonder how it got produced. Was this originally 3 times the size and reduced to the typical manga trade paperback size? The type is at times so tiny, eye strain should be anticipated.

The plot weaknesses should have been noted to the writer to clean up before publication. The streamlining of a large amount of repetition of dialogue and situations could’ve aided the written problems here.

The artistic problems are, again, the faulty of an editor that should’ve flagged poor story layouts that should’ve been noticed in the thumbnail stage.
The artist did negotiate the repetition well be not drawing the same drawings of repeated scenes.

Characters are stereotypical and the story is much the same.
Drawings of characters are unoriginal. Typical absence of setting is a significant setback.

Bottom line: I don’t recommend this book. 3 out of ten points.

A photo with, my friend, Jack Davis 10 years ago…

by on Aug.06, 2023, under Cartooning

In 2013 there was a celebration of, legendary cartoonist, mainstay of MAD magazine & friend, Jack Davis.
I was very fortunate to be invited to be part of the multi-day event that took place on St. Simons Island, Georgia.

The memories of the event, just for me, will last a lifetime. Various public events and then some personal ones. I’ll never forget time at the Davis house with Jack and his wife Dena.

8 years ago I did this large 30th anniversary card….

by on Aug.04, 2023, under Caricatures, Cartooning

In 2015 I penciled, inked and watercolored this 19″ by 12″ anniversary card.
It was for a Marion County employee who had, at the time, served 30 years. I related well to this, as this would’ve been the same year i would’ve celebrated 30 years if I had stayed with the City of Orlando.
The subject was part of a philosophy discussion group that I was a part of and existed at the time.

10 years ago I was part of a celebration of MAD cartoonist Jack Davis over on St. Simons Island, Georgia.
I was asked to speak to a Boys and Girls Club group, across the bridge, in Brunswick.
Here most of the audience poses with me near the middle.

My 2nd drawing of ‘Bunny’ & ‘Balloons’ – The opposite.

by on Aug.01, 2023, under Cartooning

Last Thursday, I pulled 2 cards from The Word Box: Bunnies & Balloons.
Thus, the first drawing of the happy bunny and balloons.
For the 2nd drawing of the hour, I suddenly though I’d do the opposite of the first with an evil balloon and a super bunny.
Next live is today at 7pm Tuesday on my Cartoons by Rob Smith, Jr. page.

My artwork from 13 years ago…..

by on Jul.28, 2023, under Cartooning, Illusration

A slew of projects I penciled and inked, this day, back in 2010.
Today, I can’t remember what most of these were for. A couple were for my Swampy’s Florida site.
I can tell each is drawn on 11″x 14″ Bristol cardstock. The paper used to be easy to acquire back then, Today, it’s very, very difficult for a singular artist to get reams of paper like that as I once did.
