March 2, 2009 – Jury Duty!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.02, 2009, under Caricatures, Cartooning, Friends, What's New?
Wow! I thought I’d be in and out in five hours tops. After 25 years of being contacted about every year and a half to serve on Jury Duty, I’ve never been there so long! Ten and a half hours. Does this mean more people needing lawyers to solve their problems or lawyers being better at getting cases?
Nevertheless, I got A LOT of artwork finished! I brought more than I thought I could get done. I finished all of that and still had time to work on other projects, too!
Included here are pieces of art I finished.
February 28, 2009 – Judging and Caricatures!

Our Florida Chapter of the National Cartoonists Society had our judging at Black Angus Steakhouse. The judging to determine a winner for a division for the annual REuben Awards in May. The Reubens is the cartoonists version of the Academy Awards.
As I snapped the photo, something had to the side and everyone turned. Nevertheless in the immediate forground is Tom Armstrong, Eddie Pittman, Glenda Armstrong, Beth Pittman and Bruce Beattie. In teh background is Mike Osbun, Robert Giordano and Linda Gialanella. Beside Mike, and hidden, is Jackie Osbun.
Later I did quite a few drawings for an event.
February 24, 2009 – Florida A&M & a New Blog Site!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Feb.27, 2009, under Cartooning, Editorials, Friends, What's New?
I was a part of a panel discussion and exhibit at Florida A&M University. The exhibit runs through March and is titled ‘Disappearing Ink’. It’s an exhibit showcasing Florida editorial cartoonists and how editorial cartoons are quickly disappearing from publications everywhere. 39 colleagues were fired or took a buyout from the newspaper company last year alone. We’ve already seen quite a few go this year and will probably see more going.
To the left is a sketch of the view of being on the receiving end of a camera. The entire event was filmed and I tried to stay still as they filmed. I’m a hyper-active person and staying still was tough!
It was a big crowd that came and was standing room only.
There are lots of photos and I’ve posted some on my new editorial cartoon blogsite, Rob’s Right. That’s alos where, from now on, my editorial cartoons will be found. So leap right over to Rob’s Right by clicking here.

We had a relaxing time hanging out with Marti and Jeff Vickery and then wandering Elam Stoltzfus‘ property. In between we visited Connie’s Kitchen in Chattahoochee. That’s a Connie’s Kitchen Customer to the right.
Below is a quick sketch made at Village Pizza in Tallahassee. We joined friends there for a fine dinner.
February 22, 2009 – Hiking in Northern Florida!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Feb.22, 2009, under Florida Outdoors!, What's New?
We hiked the Angus Goulson park in Chattahoochee, in North Florida. It’s a really nice trail with lots of hills. Sandra has sepnt time with Goulson, now in his 90s, and still living in the house he was born in near the park. To the left is a sketch made during the hike.
We also visited the dike at the Florida and Georgia border. The dike is where the Flint and Chattahoochee Rivers meet there and move on into Florida.

I made my way to Orlando for the monthly Orlando Remembered meeting. To the left are sketches of Bill Coleman, Judge Joe Baker, Claude Hunter and Charles Gray.
Below is a photo of Grace Chewning who found a GIANT Orlando pencil at a yard sale. Beside that is former Mayor Carl Langford showing his GATOR spirit, thanks to another find by Grace Chewning at the same yard sale.
Afterward I volunteered at the V.A. nursing facility in Orlando and drew some caricatures of folks there. Below is one of those.

It’s the least he could do for the rest of us.
Then there will be those who supported him that’ll be mighty mad that the “Stimulus bill” authroized 17,000 troops to Afghanistan. Nothing new to me. I wrote about this coming many times on this blog. Obama talked about it many times during the campaign. And he’s only getting started. I repeat: Welcome to Bush3. Some of his supporters may soon wish for him to put himself up as collateral for a loan. : )
