August 9, 2008 – Richard Lorenz 60th Bday!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Aug.09, 2008, under Caricatures
Today was my friend Richard Lorenz’s 60th BDay! He had a big wing ding at his new digs near the Lake and Seminole borders. Guess what I did? Here’s Jeff, a good gun-toting American! Everybody duck!
After more than five hours of drawing, I only took one photo and it was my next to last drawing. I gotta do better than that!
August 8, 2008 – Marty Caricature!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Aug.08, 2008, under Caricatures
Volusia County Sheriff’s Mike Dye drove up from Deland to have this painted for his colleague who is retiring after twenty years of public service. Above is a photograph of the watercolor caricature I created over at Chelsea Coffee for Mike today.
I’m also linking this to Illustration Friday, since it’s subject this week is ‘Sail’.

by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jul.10, 2008, under Caricatures, Florida Attractions, Florida Restaurants, Various, What\'s New?
Sandra and I made our way to Volusia County this Thursday morning. We made a breakfast stop at the well-established ‘Richard’s Place’ in Ocala. There is a sketch of a fellow who was yapping on the cell phone. |
We crossed the Ocala National Forest and made our first top at Shelt-Air private plane service within the Daytona Beach International Airport. While Sandra did her interviews for the magazine article she’s writing. I sketched planes. After this we went to DaytonaUSA. It’s all about racing and more than worth the cost of admission. You will get so busy at the attraction, that you might be like me and not even have time to draw a sketch there! |
Later, I drove down to Ormond Beach and worked with long-time cliet, Jean Oertel, on a caricature at Billy’s Tap Room. Billy’s opened in 1922 and was thriving very well this Thursday night.
A tiny version of the drawing I did is to the left. The original is very large. |
July 9, 2008 – Red Skelton – ‘I Dood It!’
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jul.09, 2008, under Caricatures, Celebrity Illustrations
Working a way again with Turner Classic Movies on and along comes Red Skelton. I love his old radio shows. I join many others as a huge fan of the Mean Widdle Kid who would cause alsorts of mayhem. He would sometimes reconsider his daring deed and then charge forward anyway: “I dood it!”. That is the name of this 1943 Vincent Minelli film. In ‘I Dood It!’ there’s lots of great music and Eleanor Powell dancing, too!
July 5, 2008 – Glenn Ford!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jul.05, 2008, under Caricatures, Celebrity Illustrations, What\'s New?
While I was working I had two Glenn Ford films running on Turner Classic Movies. First it was ‘3:10 to Yuma’ and then it was ‘Jubal’. I quickly did a sketch of Ford above.
I remember first drawing Ford as part of a huge crowd trying to pay their income taxes when I was about 14. It was for an my art class at Robert E. Lee Junior High School in Orlando. I specifically recall noticing how very big Ford’s ears were. Seeing photos as he got older those ears got bigger and bigger. I saw a photo of him not long before he died almost two years ago and there were those ears again. I sometimes wonder if I’ve been watching Ford all of these years or his ears!
July 4, 2008 – A Patriotic Wedding!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jul.04, 2008, under Caricatures, Friends, What\'s New?
My friend LeAnn Weiss got married today at Discovery Church in Edgewood. I’ve known LeAnn for a couple decades working with the Republican party back in the mid and late ’80s and into the ’90s from the Young Republicans to the Orange County Republican Executive Committee to many political campaigns. Over the years she switched gears and became an author and has produced a jillion books. Above are just a small part of the decorations. Those hung from the ceiling and were quite a few feet tall.
After the wedding I went into caricature mode as you can see above.
June 28, 2008 – Caricature!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jun.28, 2008, under Caricatures
Created a group caricature. I don’t usually do this kind of thing, but I’ve worked with the family before and decided to do it. I drew the whole thing in their house. Below is Sheila Austria who is also Mom of the quintet and playing a violin in the picture.
June 16, 2008 – Clark Gable!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jun.16, 2008, under Caricatures
As I was working on the Glenn Beck cartoon for Tuesday, I had Turner Classic Movies on. ‘Teachers Pet’ was on and as I tried to figure how best to depict All Gore’s latching onto presidential candidate Obama, I started sketching Gable. I thought I’d post it here.
If I don’t have political programs on, I have Turner Classic Movies on. I just love older films and their more realistic depiction of life instead of the melodramatic and action/adventure fantasy world depicted today.
