April 18th, 2007 – Orlando Public Library!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Apr.22, 2007, under Books, Various
After the’Orlando Remembered’ meeting, I poked my head in the library next door and there was Community Service’s Kris Woodson. She was guiding folks to the library’s new advertising campaign of ‘Don’t Take Know for an Answer!’ She coaxed me in explaining that it would be a great event and there would be CAKE! Usually, I would have missed all that was said except the CAKE part. It’s just that I was heading to the doctor for a physical and I know the extra pounds I’ve been putting on would be a main focus. Cake crumbs on my short might have been an inappropriate addition to my wardrobe!

The drawing is of Rich Crotty. Crotty spoke at the event and goes by a title of ‘Orange County Mayor’.

Had a physical in Maitland today. The drawing is of some kind of contraption attached to the wall of the examination room.

February 2nd, 2007 – Berries!

Sandra, myself, Rob, and Manfred all got some vittles after the Fairchild excursion at a small out of the way place called Berries in Miami. Very good food including an interesting dish Rob got, pumpkin ravioli. Each ravioli was filled with actual pumpkin filling.
This is a sketch looking over the bar to the outside garden area. What looks like a microphone is a lamp hanging down.
March 30th, 2007 – Charles Lane
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Apr.06, 2007, under Various, What\'s New?
I’ve been a fan of actor Charles Lane (Born Charles Gerstle Levison) for as long as I can remember, which must coincide with my first viewing television. Mr. Lane has been the part of innumerous casts of actors in as many television programs, movies and plays. Born in 1905, he began acting in the early 1930s and continued on acting throughout his life.
Most might recall his roll in ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’, ‘Meet John Doe’ or his appearances in Lucille Ball’s programs and the Beverly Hillbillies. Click here for quite a list of his accomplishments.
I don’t know when I actually first saw him, but as time strolled along, he became a very familiar face. It became fun to be watching some televized flick and spot Mr. Lane. A kind of on-going ‘Where’s Waldo? I specifically remember watching ‘Murphy’s Romance’ with Sally Field and James Garner back in 1985 in a theatre. Suddenly there he was again, as always acting older than his actual years, Mr. Charles Lane.
The photo is, of course, of Mr. Lane. The scrawl is his autograph. I received it just a couple weeks ago after he signed it and placed it in the mail. Mr. Lane is still very much alive and living in California at the healthy age of 102. His birthday was this past January 26th.
I had for the last few years been hoping to send a birthday card when I learned he was still alive and of his mailing address. Apparently there are quite a few fans that send birthday cards and receive an autograph of Mr. Lane when requested. This year I finally painted a card for him and mailed it. I received the autograph shown a couple weeks ago. My goal with this blog is to always have art attached to each of these postings of some sort and I hope Mr. Lane’s autograph will do.
Next year I hope to be able to create another card for Mr. Lane and for many years to come.Â
March 24th, 2007 – Sandra’s Birthday Card!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.26, 2007, under Various, What\'s New?
I created this birthday card for Sandra of turtles visiting the Rainbow Springs of old. This was a flying leaf people could ride above the park. Sandra and her family rode it back when it was a “thrill” ride back in the early ’70s.
March 22nd, 2007 – Springs Festival Meeting!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.23, 2007, under Various, What\'s New?
I attended the Marion County Springs Festival meeting. I drew a number of sketches. This is probably the better of the bunch but a lousy likeness of the person I drew. The distance was about fifteen feet away. That’s what all of this sketchin’ is about. Getting better – even at fifteen feet.
March 16th, 2007 – Jury Duty – Part 2!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.17, 2007, under Various, What\'s New?
I was selected for a jury last Monday and reported this morning. All started off well. We were brought into the courtroom and the lawyers were off. Witnesses, evidence, video, etc all came our way. After a number of hours we were marched off to lunch at Picadilly restaurant and then brought back to the courthouse again. The lawyers made there final statements and we were taken back to the jury room to wait to be given the judges instructions. Instead the judge soon joined us in the room and let us know that a mistrial had been called for. That was quite a disappointment when we had spent so much time there as it was. However the judge was extremely cordial and we briefly discussed the case in which it seems we would have been a bit of a battle for us to have come to a unanimous decision.
Because the case has been rescheduled and will start all over again it seems best to me to leave out details of the case – just incase – someone reads this who by some wild chance ends up on the next jury. I realize that might seem really strange to those scattered across the country and the world.
Sometime I might write about it because it had amazing similarities to incidents that I have experienced in my life.
The sketch if of the guard who greeted us when we first arrived. He’s behind a desk reading his bible.
March 12th, 2007 – Jury Duty!

I was a part of Jury Duty Monday. As I sat I got a lot of the work I brought with me finished. Here’s a pencil sketch of a coloring book I’ve working on.
For the first time in around 16 times of serving Jury Duty, I was picked for a trial. I was pretty considering what the trial is about. More about that after the trial Friday.
November 23rd, 2006 – Painted Into A Corner!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Nov.23, 2006, under Various
Needed to explain an expression and I’m using this space to do it.
I did a quick sketch and color to get the idea across.
“Painted into a corner†can more visually be easier to understand. See cartoon attached. Imagine painting a floor in a room. On your hands and knees you paint and paint. You stop. Stand up and find you have painted the entire room. The problem is that you are in a corner of the room where your only way out is walking through wet paint. In others words, you have no easy way out. You’re stuck.Â
