January 29th, 2015 – Facebook Artist Challenge – My Romer, the Recycling Squirrel

Side note: My pal Pam Treadwell asked if I would post three bits of work I’m doing or have done for five days within my Facebook page. This is #2 of 3 for today.

Back in my old Orlando City Hall days I produced a comic strip for the magazine City Hallways. It was called Romer, the Recycling Squirrel. I started the recycling strip in 1988 when the City’s recycling program started with a lady named Pat Bortz. I was one of the first to work with her and the strip was an outgrowth of that. The program and those in charge of it changed many times over the next two decades, but I was still involved. I produced Romer until the magazine ended in the early 2000s.

I was a nut about recycling at City Hall as most anyone there could tell you. I still am. It just doesn’t make sense to me that we spend so much of taxpayer money buying land to dumb garbage, contaminate the land and then spend more taxpayer money to clean up the land and our water supply.

If done correctly much of the garbage can be recycled and the government can make money from it. Unfortunately most governments have tossed garbage pickup to private companies that cost taxpayers far more money and lose the opportunity to control garbage dump sites and recycling. Garbage companies don’t like recycling. They make more money if they have something to pick up.

Romer was originally in black and white. This was one of the early strips from about 25 years ago. I’ll post a few more that are in color.

January 24th, 2015 – More Hand Painted Valentine’s Day Cards!

by on Jan.24, 2015, under Cartooning

2015-0124-ValentinesArt

Here’s one of the Valentine’s Day cards I produced today. This is for her skin diving husband who looks for sea life of the octopus variety when he isn’t otherwise collecting guns. Nothing worse to encounter undersea than a well armed octopus. Should have had him say, “You kids keep off my lawn!”

January 22nd, 2015 – Inking a Stack of Work!

by on Jan.22, 2015, under Cartooning

2015-0122-Inking

I spent a few hours this evening inking a stack of pages involving a number of projects. I’m back in a local coffee shop. Second time this week with major accomplishments as a result. Been reading books of favorite writers, Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley & others of the Round Table and their need for a place to hole away and get work done. Realized I need to do the same again.

It’s been exactly a year since I stopped going to my old coffee shop haunt due to political reasons. Since then have bounced around at chain spots and other places. Seems I have found a new spot- or as pals Craig Zablo & John Beatty call my “office” – to hunker down and really get work done

December 23rd, 2014 – Christmas Dinner Artwork!

2014-1223-Piepers-Sammys

Had dinner last night with fellow cartoonist George Pieper and his wife Noreen at Sammy’s Italian Restaurant in Ocala, Florida. George nabbed a photo of me whipping up a painted ornament for them. Did you know the perfect paint for Santa’s suit is spaghetti sauce?

December 23rd, 2014 – Christmas stop in Ocala!

Dropped this off to my pal Robin in Ocala. She being a science fiction fan gave me the rare opportunity to draw a Yuletide intergalactic scene!

The drawing was to also answer the age old question: Does Santa wear his space helmet with his beard in or out? Space air does wonders for Santa’s beard!

I’m working on this years Christmas card. Here are pencils.

The location is The Ivy House in Ocala, Florida. It’s an 1890 house that has this wonderful Southern restaurant in it. Great food for a reasonable price.
