Inktober #9 – I’m Drawing Osprey in Downtown Orlando 1867!

by on Oct.09, 2017, under Cartooning

#Inktober #8 –

Mike Clark requested:
“Osprey pulling a bass out of Lake Ivanhoe with a downtown Orlando backdrop”

Above Officer Coopersmith apprehends the vile bank robber, Dooley Monahan, out of Lake Ivanhoe a mile north of Downtown Orlando.

It’s little known that, Orlando’s greatest police chief, Robert Chewning in 1967 secretly assembled a wildlife arm of the police force. More and more critters across Florida were breaking laws of all sizes. Something had to be done. Upon becoming Chief, Chewning recruited his secret critter task force to rid the streets of the animal crime wave. During his tenure crimes by wildlife dropped 97%!

This was such a secret group that, I don’t believe, even Grace Ann Wendorff Chewning knew about it! And she knows everything! 🙂

The 1967 view is from the more southernly shore of Lake Ivanhoe just before the, then, new Interstate 4, looking easterly with the OUC building in the background. The Armory is in the background on the right hand side.

On the road in Kissimmee! – May 11th, 2017

by on May.11, 2017, under Books, Florida History!

Powerful day Thursday as I visited Kissimmee, Florida, and did some exploring I haven’t done in years. Started off meeting with my old friend, Shawn Anderson, visiting from Minnesota, in Historic Downtown Kissimmee. On my way there from Lakeland I got a call from another old friend, Jeremy Buchanon who happened to be now working for Osceola County in Kissimmee! So Jeremy joined us.

I wandered and explored Makinson Hardware that opened in 1884 and still going strong.

Then on to the old Osceola County courthouse. Leslie, of the guardian ad litem program partly housed in the building, was very kind to give me a tour through this fascinating building. There are more photos of the courthouse over at my Swampy’s Florida page.

After leaving Kissimmee, i did some poking around for books, that I usually like to do on my birthday. I found some wonder books! And quite a few for friends!

On the way home I pit stopped at The Donut King and nabbed the monster sized apple fritter for my drive Friday into Tampa and 3 more days on the road! More to come! 😀

A Trail of Two Churches! – April 24th, 2016

by on Apr.24, 2016, under Sketchbook, Swampy's Florida

2016-0424-HeritageMethodist-Clearwater

Before and after the bit o’ hiking I did at Upper Tampa Bay Park I was doing some Swampy’s Florida ‪#‎Sunday‬ Service visits.

The first was a visit with the friends I was staying with this past weekend. Sandy Rhodes Huff & her husband Bill attend Heritage United Methodist Church in Clearwater. Bill was singing with the church quartet. Thanks to them for their hospitality again and cheers to Bill for a great performance. The first sketch is of the pastor done from the back of the room, as usual.

After the hike a run to Ocala for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Mt. Zion AME Church. Got a lot more sketching done and learned lots about the church. More over at Swampy’s Florida. The rest of the sketches are from that visit. Bit of a handicap here as I left my glasses in the automobile and I was in back of the room.

A more than full day and I’m fully pooped!

Live at Torreya State Park along the trail during the War Between the States! – April 13th, 2016

by on Apr.11, 2016, under Florida History!, Florida Outdoors!

From Chattahoochee, I quickly made my way to Torreya State Park, near Bristol, to get travel and hiking information and to add a second live video using the new Facebook option. Here, I take the north trail from the Gregory House where the six cannon encampment had been for the confederacy during the Civil War.

You can plan a trip to Torreya State Park here: https://www.floridastateparks.org/park/Torreya

Many thanks to my pals of many years, Russell and Alice Sue Noell for their hospitality this weekend. Great vittles and socializing! Another dear pal, Debbie Schafer, called while I was there exclaiming, “You’re socializing!!??!” It is an unusual occurrence.

Right now dashing off some artwork before I get home!
