Had dinner with the Turkels at First Choice Chinese Restaurant in Western Orange County. Here’s a drawing of some of the condiments on the table.
March 21st, 2007 – V.A. Nursing Home!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.23, 2007, under Caricatures, What\'s New?
I drew caricatures of residents of the Veterans Administration nursing home in Orlando. The individual caricature is of a 96 year old fellow who played baseball many years ago.
This photo is of fellow volunteers of the Red Hat Society who conduct a BINGO! party every third Wednesday of the month for the residents. I drew caricatures of these lovely ladies.
March 20th, 2007 – Ernie Kovacs!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.21, 2007, under What\'s New?
It was back in July that artist extrodinaire Hy Eisman recommended my drawing Ernie Kovacs. I wrote Kovacs name on a slip of paper and added it to the cup of humorous writer and creator names. Last week I came to the last name in that cup and it was Kovacs name. This week I add another 25 names into the cup.
Kovacs could be said to be ahead of his time if not for the majority dopey capitalists of today who think with their wallet and not their brains. Kovacs had the opportunity to shine and he did. I’m grateful he did it when he did. The monopoly media certainly wouldn’t let him be as innovative and creative now as he was then.
Next week from the current pop star cup comes Jennifer Lopez. Frankly, I’d rather do another drawing of Kovacs! Lopez is a grand example of the flairless, boring “celebrity” of today. Yawn. I fear we will from now on measure “celebrities” by only physical measurements rather than intellectual and personality ones.
March 19th, 2007 – Dorris Bobber!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.21, 2007, under Friends, What\'s New?
I attended the memorial for Dorris Bobber in Loch Haven Park behind the old Science Center in Orlando. A string quartet from the Orlando Philharmonic, one of Dorris’ major charity missions, performed. Here is a drawing of two of the four there.
March 17th, 2007 – Florida Trail Association Annual Meeting!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.19, 2007, under What\'s New?
I drew caricatures at the Florida Trail Association’s annual meeting in Umatilla. Here is one of Mike DeWitt, who is a passionate advocate of the Florida Trail. He’s documenting his trek across the entire Florida Trail in the Tampa Tribune. You can read more here!
March 16th, 2007 – Jury Duty – Part 2!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.17, 2007, under Various, What\'s New?
I was selected for a jury last Monday and reported this morning. All started off well. We were brought into the courtroom and the lawyers were off. Witnesses, evidence, video, etc all came our way. After a number of hours we were marched off to lunch at Picadilly restaurant and then brought back to the courthouse again. The lawyers made there final statements and we were taken back to the jury room to wait to be given the judges instructions. Instead the judge soon joined us in the room and let us know that a mistrial had been called for. That was quite a disappointment when we had spent so much time there as it was. However the judge was extremely cordial and we briefly discussed the case in which it seems we would have been a bit of a battle for us to have come to a unanimous decision.
Because the case has been rescheduled and will start all over again it seems best to me to leave out details of the case – just incase – someone reads this who by some wild chance ends up on the next jury. I realize that might seem really strange to those scattered across the country and the world.
Sometime I might write about it because it had amazing similarities to incidents that I have experienced in my life.
The sketch if of the guard who greeted us when we first arrived. He’s behind a desk reading his bible.
March 12th, 2007 – Jury Duty!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.13, 2007, under Various, What\'s New?
I was a part of Jury Duty Monday. As I sat I got a lot of the work I brought with me finished. Here’s a pencil sketch of a coloring book I’ve working on.
For the first time in around 16 times of serving Jury Duty, I was picked for a trial. I was pretty considering what the trial is about. More about that after the trial Friday.
March 11th, 2007 – Molly Goodheads!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.13, 2007, under Florida History!, Florida Restaurants, Friends, What\'s New?
After the Inkslinger meeting, Sandra and I headed out to Ozona, north of Dunedin, for dinner. We had hoped togo to a new location we had found for bar-b-q. However, ‘The Ozona Pig’, as it is called, is closed Sundays. So, we crossed the street to ‘Molly Goodhead Raw Bar and Seafood’. The restaurant has been around for quite a long time and is a favorite of people who live in the area and Snowbirds. Inkslinger and terrific artist John Stevens joined us.
The drawing is of a piece of driftwood that is used as a sign to point the way to drift to the restrooms.
March 11th, 2007 – Suncoast Inkslingers!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.13, 2007, under Florida History!, Friends, What\'s New?
We headed to the Belleview Biltmore south of Clearwater for the monthly Suncoast Inkslingers meeting. This is a drawing of member Dan Smith. I gave him too much beard.
Good news came Friday that the efforts to save the building, of which we were a part, were successful and the building has been bought to be saved and preserved!
March 10th, 2007 – Holly Hammock!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.13, 2007, under What\'s New?
After a busy week and with less sleep than usual I really shouldn’t have tried to take a hike with Sandra at Holly Hammock in Ross Prairie State Park in Marion County. I konked out on the way and we didn’t finish the hike. I did draw this giant mound made by a very busy gopher. The indentations were of at least on deer who had nosed around the mound earlier.

by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.13, 2007, under Florida Outdoors!, What\'s New?
I was in Daytona Beach getting some work done. It was Bike Week and motorcycles everywhere! Here’s a brief sketch I drew of a bike.
