March 31st, 2011 – March Sketch & Locksmiths Fixing Cars!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Apr.01, 2011, under Cartooning, Sketchbook, Various, What's New?
Made a trip to pick up the new Swampy’s Florida Lakeland coloring book. Along the way stopped at a Steak ‘n Shake and had a burger and shake with my father and looked over some comics I recently pulled out and took the photo below. Above is a sketch I made there to wrap up the March Sketch-A-Day.
Heading home I stopped for something to drink at a convenience store and came out to a car that wouldn’t start. I quickly called the Allstate roadside help number and waited. This the the third time this has happened since December. The car has been looked at a number of times. Replaced batteries, changed out wires, etc. And here I was again. After a while a car pulled up with a Pop-A-Lock sign on the top. A locksmith with a battery charger had been sent. I was hoping for a bit more… and I got it. The fellow asked what happened. I said I’ll show him. I got in the car and turned the key…and the car started. Was I embarrassed! We stood and discussed the various earlier efforts to fix it in the past and potential causes. The fellow, Julius, figured it out. It’s the starter. It’s missing internal teeth. The car will usually start. BUT if you happen to try and start it when the starter is in a spot of a missing tooth, it won’t start. Now I know the problem. First I have to get through a busy weekend and then next week deal with a bad tooth.
March 30th, 2011 – Sketch-A-Day: For Swampy’s Comic Strip!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.30, 2011, under Cartooning, Sketchbook, Swampy's Florida
A very busy day of trying to move websites, visits with accountants about accounting things in life, a sudden need to visit a car fix-it shop, etc, kept me from being able to do a more involved sketch. Here I ‘m working on a police character that visits a couple of upcoming Swampy’s Florida comic strips. In another endeavor I patterned a police office after my father. So, I ‘m doing it again here.

March 28th, 2011 – March Sketch-A-Day: Duke Dukes it Out!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.28, 2011, under Cartooning, Celebrity Illustrations, Sketchbook
Here’s today’s sketch: The Duke (as suggested by Dick Daniels) takes out a couple folks that were discussed during the UStream broadcast and too hard to explain here even briefly. Watching is a baby alligator (Suggested by Terisa Glover). I drew this without reference for John Wayne, so please excuse the likeness.
March 26th, 2011 – Hikin’ & Sketchin’!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.28, 2011, under Florida Outdoors!, Sketchbook
Saturday was ‘Take a Hike, Florida’ day! I joined in at the Grand Opening of the Charles Bronson State Forest in east Orange County near Christmas, Florida. There was a great turnout for the hike and the trail is EXCELLENT! It was great to run into a number of Florida Trail Association friends. As I hiked, I sketched. Above is one where I kept walking and sketching.
Here are some photos!:
March 25th, 2011 – Sketch-A-Day: Banjo Sparky!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.25, 2011, under Cartooning, Sketchbook
While on UStream today had a number of visitors and we got talking about music. I made some mention of attendee Terisa Glover’s dog, Sparky, providing banjo music at her store and the sketch above came to mind.
This came to mind also after learning that Cedric Hohnstadt is showing various drawings from his ‘Dueling Pigs’ site. I contributed one back in October.
March 24th, 2011 – March Sketch-A-Day – Sailboat!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.24, 2011, under Cartooning, Sketchbook
Here’s today’s sketch. Thanks to Charlene Johnson, Deborah Wilson and Jared Sloger for contributing the subject matter. The Sketch-A-Day is part of a large group of cartoonists who are all exercising their sketching arms and contributing to Cedric Hohnstadt’s ‘March is Sketchbook Month’. I’m making it a bit more fun by taking suggestions and sketching those. I’ve been trying to do all of them using UStream and drawing them live.
Here’s the recording of the drawing:

I started talking about MArty Allen’s 89th birthday today when I realized folks wouldn’t know what I was talking about, so I did a quick sketch of him off the top of my head.

March 22nd, 2011 – Sketch-A-Day – Camera
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.23, 2011, under Cartooning, Sketchbook
While at a Steak ‘n Shake in Lake Mary, Florida, after a gig tonight I asked the waiter, Steve, to name something he likes. His answer: Camera. I stirred with Swampy, the Swamp Ape, and that I was near the brick lined streets of Downtown Sanford and sketched the above. Below is a recording I made live while at Steak ‘n Shake:
