by Rob Smith, Jr. on Apr.24, 2016, under Sketchbook, Swampy's Florida
Before and after the bit o’ hiking I did at Upper Tampa Bay Park I was doing some Swampy’s Florida #Sunday Service visits.
The first was a visit with the friends I was staying with this past weekend. Sandy Rhodes Huff & her husband Bill attend Heritage United Methodist Church in Clearwater. Bill was singing with the church quartet. Thanks to them for their hospitality again and cheers to Bill for a great performance. The first sketch is of the pastor done from the back of the room, as usual.
After the hike a run to Ocala for the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Mt. Zion AME Church. Got a lot more sketching done and learned lots about the church. More over at Swampy’s Florida. The rest of the sketches are from that visit. Bit of a handicap here as I left my glasses in the automobile and I was in back of the room.
A more than full day and I’m fully pooped!
Live at Torreya State Park along the trail during the War Between the States! – April 13th, 2016
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Apr.11, 2016, under Florida History!, Florida Outdoors!
From Chattahoochee, I quickly made my way to Torreya State Park, near Bristol, to get travel and hiking information and to add a second live video using the new Facebook option. Here, I take the north trail from the Gregory House where the six cannon encampment had been for the confederacy during the Civil War.
You can plan a trip to Torreya State Park here: https://www.floridastateparks.org/park/Torreya
July 23rd, 2015 – My watercolor painting of Whitey Markle for the Silver Springs Alliance!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jul.23, 2015, under Caricatures, Cartooning, Florida Outdoors!
Meant to post these earlier! This one of 5 paintings I did for the speakers at an event our group, Silver Springs Alliance, had back in May. As each speaker spoke I illustrated what they were speaking about. LAter I added watercolor.
Here’s the one for, Florida folk singer/Sierra Club leader/all around good guy, Whitey Markle. He covered a great deal of territory and it was fun for me, knowing the area so well, to poke further fun at it all in the artwork. Each painting is given to the speakers as a “Thank you!” for coming out and helping more Florida citizens learn more about our water problems in our great state.
(Been meaning to post more, but have been on the road again! Lots going on the next few days. I should be posting a lot more.)
On the #drawing board: Start of a mural of Cracker Florida!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Sep.15, 2014, under Cartooning
This is just a small sample of a twenty foot wide mural I’m starting on. This part is of a stream with a cypress tree. In the stream is a bear and bunny making there way along. The mural also includes a Cracker-style home, a Florida panther cooking and, of course, an alligator – playing a banjo. I’ll add updates as I go along.
September 6th, 2014 – Signing Books in Homosassa Springs State Park.
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Sep.07, 2014, under What's New?
On the #drawing board today: Signed and drew in lots and lots of Swampy’s Florida books today at Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park for “Speak Up Homosassa Springs”. Here are a couple photos from teh event.
The young fellow was funny. I asked him about what he likes and found him very articulate. So as he spoke of how he would like to wash things, I asked what he would like to wash. A car. How will you be sure the cars get washed? Will you be a manager? Yes. And on it went. He’s a thinking youngster and hope he stays that way!
June 10th, 2014 – Today on the drawing board: Hiking cartoon in progress!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jun.11, 2014, under Cartooning
This is the inked version of a gag cartoon I’m working on at the moment. My approach is a lot looser than I normally ink. I know that the color needs to tell part of the story, so I backed off tighter inking. The cartoon is due this week and I still have to format in a panel template and then color. I have a set of cartoons to color and plan to color them all at the same time.
May 27th, 2014 – Today on the #Drawing Board: Prepping a studio caricature!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on May.27, 2014, under Caricatures, Florida Outdoors!
Here are the pencils for two people who volunteered at Silver Springs State Park to clean up the Silver River and area around it. it’s figured they’ve raised some $3,000 in cans collected.
This is the pencil version that I’m sending in for approval. After approval, I have another step for prep and then adding watercolor. I’m sure to post the finished artwork in the next couple days.
I have a painting to also paint and plan to do both at the same time.

Today penciled and inked this illustration for a five mile run – for people – coming up this fall in Silver Springs State Park in Florida.
January 9th, 2014 – Lots of work to do Today!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Feb.09, 2014, under Caricatures, Cartooning, Illusration
Tons of artwork has to get done today! From caricatures to hiking cartoons to illustration, etc! Was hoping to be at a presentation today by Rick Smith, son of author Patrick Smith who wrote the Florida legendary book, ‘A Land Remembered’, but that looks impossible two hours before his presentation. Pen to paper and I’ll post what I can.
