#Inktober #9 – Coral Castle, Homestead, Florida.
The Coral Castle in Homestead was suggested for the Swampy’s Florida characters to visit for inktober. Here’s Swampy, Trilby, Zuber, Alva and Ortona the egret hanging around, probably the best known sculpture at the Coral Castle, the hand carved stone moon.
Edward Leedskalnin made use of part of the foundation of Florida, coral rock, to carve sculptures by himself without using machinery. The huge effort was a tribute for a lost love that Edward never re-acquired. He sculpted 1,100 tons of rock for the rest of his life. He also moved it all somehow. He moved all of his rock formations to it’s current location along US 1 to get nearer to an audience.
67 years later the audience continues to come and, if you haven’t been, Swampy recommends a visit to a most unusual demonstration of love.
