December 5th, 2007 – Book: A Redhead for Mike Shayne!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Dec.05, 2007, under Books, What\'s New?
I love the Mike Shayne series that started in 1939 by David Dresser writing as “Brett Halliday”. The books from the ’30s until the late ’50s were smashing detective fare on the streets of Miami. Around 1960 something happened to Dresser and Dell had a zillion writers pose as “Halliay”. The covers swung from the beautifully painted to being badly photographed and tasteless.
This is the first non-Dresser book I’ve read. I knew it wouldn’t be the same and have put it off for many years. After the last book I read, I decided this was a good time to be disappointed. Boy, was I. This was terrible! The main character miswritten and tons of holes in the plot. What a mess! I’ll stick with teh Dresser books…..until I get brave again….
