by Rob Smith, Jr. on Nov.20, 2013, under Cartooning, Editorials, What's New?
When worlds collide! – I usually never post any of my editorial cartoons here , or anything political for that matter, on this personal page. But since this is a bit innocuous, I figure I can post this one.

What if the problems with the TSA could have been seen in the past?
Here’s a rare posting of one of my editorial cartoons here, just cause it ain’t all that controversial. 🙂 That and my editorial cartoon blog is not working right now due to a delayed reaction to a move from one server to another.

Too much swirling around to work in the studio, so for the first time a quite a while I headed over to Chelsea Coffee and knocked a whole lot of artwork out in an hour and a half. Above is a photo of some of it.

It’s a dragon party with special hors d’oerves.rty
It’s a dragon party with special hors d’oeuvres. Sometimes when snacking on the local human population it takes couple of tries to find the right dip.
The word of the week for Illustration Friday in ‘Dip’ and here is a drawing for that. During my UStream drawing session last Monday Jared Sloger threw in the word ‘Dragon’ to add to the mix. The result is above. Below is the recording of the drawing of the art.
November 14, 2009 – Yellow Ribbon Event!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Nov.19, 2009, under Friends
Above is a caricature I drew of this Army hero, Jesse. I have Jesse as a hobbit trying to use his computer skills to defeat the dragon as Gandalf loses his patience with the slowness of the digital world.
Cartoonists gathered at the Sawgrass Marriott in Ponte Vedra, Florida, to welcome home 500 Army soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. We were part of a Yellow Ribbon event put on by The Florida National Guard. The cartoonists attending were Michael Jantze, of the comic strip ‘The Norm’ and teacher at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Don Perlin, co-creator of Ghost Rider and at one time or other has drawn most of the Marvel superheroes, and Aaron Olson, National Guardsman himself and student at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Above artists Aaron Olson, Michael Jantze and Don Perlin draw for soldiers. Don’s wife, Becky is at the the end.
After the soldiers had gone Dana, Aaron’s wife, and Aaron Olson speak to Major Sarah McLevy, who did a great job organizing the huge event. Seated is Michael Jantze, drawing a Hulk cartoon for the Major.
Me, Michael Jantze, Arron and Dana Olson.
July 10, 2009 – First Amendment Foundation Award!

I attended the Friday luncheon of the Florida Press Association at historic The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida. During the luncheon the Florida Press Association presented awards to those of the daily papers. Also given were awards from The First Amendment Foundation. The Pete Weitzel/Friends of the First Amendment Award was given to Pat Gleason, who is an assistant to Governor Charlie Crist on many things including open government. She is a great lady. She assisted Sandra and I when visiting the Governors Library & Sandra donated many of her books. Governor Crist was at the luncheon to present the award. Below is a fuzzy photo of Pat Gleason speaking, to the right of the photo.
I was honored to receive the Sunshine Award for my editorial cartoons on the subject of Sunshine Week. Below the photo are the two Sunshine Week cartoons. My time at Orlando City Hall greatly helped my constructing these two cartoons. Director Barbara Peterson was a big help!
To the right is a colored sketch of drapery in The Breakers.
While at the Florida Press luncheon I met Mark Mathes who once editted a ton of cartoonists when he was with Tribune Media Services. Amongst those is cartoonist and editor, Dick Kulpa. Dick was one time editor of the infamous Weekly World News. I once penciled a week of comics strips for Dick’s comic strip ‘Ghost Story Club’ many years ago.
Anyway, Mark invited Dick over and we went to dinner. Dick and I drew each other and a photo of such is below.
April 22, 2009 – Coffee Shop Workout!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Apr.25, 2009, under Cartooning, Editorials, Various
More and more most of the art I draw is at a local coffee shop where I get away from the phones, internet and various other distractions. Here’s one of the tables at the Chelsea Coffee shop with the drawing board that friend Richard Menard got me years ago, along with pens and an editorial cartoon. I clip the I-pod to the side of the board and listen to political talk shows.
