Book: ‘Shazam!: The Greatest Stories Ever Told’
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jun.30, 2019, under Books
As I continue to insert cartooning into my reading material. I thought it would be easy to do this, but it is tough. I have a history of Andy Jackson and indians book I’m reading and want to keep reading. It’s tough enough to add fiction. Cartoon fiction is even tougher. But I really need to take in more cartooning collections.
Shazam!: The Greatest Stories Ever Told VOL 01 by Bill Parker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
A mostly great collection of the comic book stories of Captain Marvel. This collection begins with the earliest story by C.C. Beck in 1940 to 1998. This also chronicles the deterioration of the comic book industry. The stories start off as light good guy vs. bad guy and transform into a muddled soap opera. I cared about the earlier stories and couldn’t care less about the later, despite all of the bleeding heart mess.
So, I would not define these as “the Greatest Stories” or even the “Greatest” mediocre ones. The first half of the stories fit the title.
The incredible work of C.C. Beck is the best reason to pick up this volume. He had so much fun with his stories. From crazy creatures of the past to talking worms and tigers. Today there is some weird idea that all of this must be explained, as if explanations make any of it more real. It’s just fun and fun is hard to find these days.
Bottom line: i half recommend this book. 7 out of ten points.

November 14, 2009 – Yellow Ribbon Event!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Nov.19, 2009, under Friends
Above is a caricature I drew of this Army hero, Jesse. I have Jesse as a hobbit trying to use his computer skills to defeat the dragon as Gandalf loses his patience with the slowness of the digital world.
Cartoonists gathered at the Sawgrass Marriott in Ponte Vedra, Florida, to welcome home 500 Army soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. We were part of a Yellow Ribbon event put on by The Florida National Guard. The cartoonists attending were Michael Jantze, of the comic strip ‘The Norm’ and teacher at the Savannah College of Art and Design, Don Perlin, co-creator of Ghost Rider and at one time or other has drawn most of the Marvel superheroes, and Aaron Olson, National Guardsman himself and student at the Savannah College of Art and Design.
Above artists Aaron Olson, Michael Jantze and Don Perlin draw for soldiers. Don’s wife, Becky is at the the end.
After the soldiers had gone Dana, Aaron’s wife, and Aaron Olson speak to Major Sarah McLevy, who did a great job organizing the huge event. Seated is Michael Jantze, drawing a Hulk cartoon for the Major.
Me, Michael Jantze, Arron and Dana Olson.
October 3, 2009 – Suncoast Inkslingers!

We had our first Suncoast Inkslinger meeting in a few months. We gathered at Bay Coast Coffee Market in Clearwater. Below is a photo of the gathering. To the right is a sketch I made during a discussion with Ron Johnson and Jim Fern about the possibility of Ben Franklin being a mad scientist.
