June 5th, 2010 – National Trails Day!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jun.06, 2010, under Florida History!, Florida Outdoors!
Headed over to Silver River State Park about 5 miles. Above is a sketch from across the Silver River at the boat landing at the end of the River Trail.
After that I took the Fort King Military Trail. Below is a sketch from that I added color to.
At the boat launch all these little children were squealing about seeing a turtle. The softshell poked more of his head out and part of his body. He was a huge sucker. I pointed out to the little folks that the turtle was about the size of a little red head there and he was probably hiding under the launch to keep away from hungry gators. Their eyes got all big and scampered back so they might spot the shy critter again. Below is as much of the turtle I could get in a photo.

March 16th, 2010 – Creature from the Black Lagoon!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Mar.23, 2010, under Florida Attractions, Florida History!, Friends, What's New?
I attended a 3-D showing of ‘The Creature from the Black Lagoon’ on March 16th, 2010. I had a great time visiting with friends I was surprised to run into there, Paula Large, Jerry Darkey, Priscilla Rose, Dan Stapleton, etc. I got to finally meet Holly and Dolly of ‘Holly and Dolly’s Bar and Grill in Casselberry. The twins were also former dancers at Church Street Station and mermaids at Weeki Wachee. To the left is a sketch of someone at the theater.
The best part of the film viewing is that Ginger Stanley attended. Ms. Stanley was the stand-in for Julia Adams in ‘The Creature from the Black Lagoon’. She spoke before and after the film about her experiences in the film and answered questions. After the viewing she was outside the theater greeting fans and signing autographs, which she did for hours. Below is the autograph and below that is a photo of Ms. Stanley and myself.
February 16, 2010 – Adrift!

Here’s a tiger adrift!
It’s Illustration Friday’s word of the week: Adrift. During my UStream broadcast I called out for another word. Thanks to Jared Sloger and Chris Bjors who piped up ‘Tiger’ and ‘Ribbon’. So I added both. You see the tiger and if you don’t recognize the ribbon, it is not just something you tie in your hair, it is also a type of flag.
February 2nd, 2010 – Focused!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Feb.02, 2010, under Cartooning, Friends
I had a little bit of extra time after this past Monday’s UStreaming of me drawing the editorial cartoon. So I tossed out to viewers the Illustration Friday word of the week. I ask for another word to make it more fun. Dick Daniels came up with “Rubber Duck”. So, I quickly I focused on ‘Focused’ and figured out how to create a gag with ‘Rubber Duck’. Above is my contribution to ‘Focused’.
June 8, 2009 – SATW – The Citadel & Flowers!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jun.15, 2009, under Friends, Other Travels, Sketchbook, Various
The next morning (the 8th) was a breakfast meeting for the SATW. I went out and got a photo of one of two neon signs left in Downtown Charleston.
The first of our tours of Charleston was to The Citadel.
I loved these hand painted metal soldiers. I wish I had that kind of patience to paint such intricacy!…Well, a lot of people wish I had that kind of patience!
The second tour was to Magnolia Gardens. Below is a page of sketches made there.
Below is a few photos from Magnolia Place.
