July 23rd, 2015 – My watercolor painting of Whitey Markle for the Silver Springs Alliance!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jul.23, 2015, under Caricatures, Cartooning, Florida Outdoors!
Meant to post these earlier! This one of 5 paintings I did for the speakers at an event our group, Silver Springs Alliance, had back in May. As each speaker spoke I illustrated what they were speaking about. LAter I added watercolor.
Here’s the one for, Florida folk singer/Sierra Club leader/all around good guy, Whitey Markle. He covered a great deal of territory and it was fun for me, knowing the area so well, to poke further fun at it all in the artwork. Each painting is given to the speakers as a “Thank you!” for coming out and helping more Florida citizens learn more about our water problems in our great state.
(Been meaning to post more, but have been on the road again! Lots going on the next few days. I should be posting a lot more.)
July 2nd, 2015 – My Color Version of the Creature in the Woods!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jul.02, 2015, under Cartooning, Swampy's Florida
Here’s the color version of the drawing I posted last night!
Trilby is strolling through the woods to a picnic and is bothered by an intruding alien & his transportation device. The lone extraterrestrial inquires as to the nearest burger joint. Trilby points the way to the The Burger Inn, though, in truth, he’s not quite sure where he is at the moment.
July 1st, 2015 – My Inking of a Creature in the Woods.
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jul.01, 2015, under Cartooning
I’m grounded for a bit and getting as much artwork out as I can. Amongst the cartooning done tonight included the next few days of my daily Swampy’s Florida daily celebration cartoons. This one was fun! The fun of aliens is that you can make it up as you go along! grin emoticon
I’ll leave a shroud of mystery as to what this creature might be celebrating Thursday. Tomorrow you can see the color version over at Swampy’s Florida or I’ll later share it here.
I’ve been having fun creating a continuous story linking the celebratory daily cartoons into a story. The fun is trying to figure out how to link each day together!

Also thanks to Tim Reynolds and The Knowledge Exchange for keeping the books going!
January 27th, 2015 – I’m Chug-a-lugging Artwork Again!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jan.28, 2015, under Cartooning
My pal Pam Pam Treadwell wants me to post 3 pictures here I drew. Well, I’ve been hunkered down again in the past few hours reworking a Swampy project. Got 18 pages penciled and inked. So, here’s them and three close ups.
January 22nd, 2015 – Inking a Stack of Work!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jan.22, 2015, under Cartooning
I spent a few hours this evening inking a stack of pages involving a number of projects. I’m back in a local coffee shop. Second time this week with major accomplishments as a result. Been reading books of favorite writers, Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley & others of the Round Table and their need for a place to hole away and get work done. Realized I need to do the same again.
It’s been exactly a year since I stopped going to my old coffee shop haunt due to political reasons. Since then have bounced around at chain spots and other places. Seems I have found a new spot- or as pals Craig Zablo & John Beatty call my “office” – to hunker down and really get work done
January 6th, 2015 – Frogs in air-space!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jan.06, 2015, under Illusration
Here’s my latest watercolor painting of frogs and Florida history. This is a frog in the place of aviator Tony Jannus, who is regarded as the pilot of the first scheduled airline in the world. This occurred over Tampa Bay in 1914. The passenger was a former St Petersburg mayor who won an auction to be the first passenger for $400.
December 3rd, 2014- My annual Christmas card artwork!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Dec.03, 2014, under Illusration
My annual Christmas card of Florida native critters inside The Ivy House in Ocala, Florida. Used lots of reference for the interior of the 1890 house/restaurant and had to skew things a bit to make the image more readable. Also, used more reference than years past for the critters. I tried to limit the animals a bit so that the interior of the building could be better felt and understood. I finished inking this Monday.
The Dorris Bobber Memorial Palmetto Bug is hidden somewhere. You’d need to see the actual card to find him, though. This is the first year Swampy, Trilby and Zuber of Swampy’s Florida appear as part of the illustration.
