September 28th, 2013 – Silver Springs State Park Party
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Sep.28, 2013, under Friends, Swampy's Florida
Above Dr. Bob Knight, Lisa Saupp and Natalie Lyons save Swampy from the bite of the saber-tooth tiger!
Had a lot of fun tonight at a party celebrating Silver Springs becoming part of the Florida State Park system. The event was held at the Silver River Museum with famed photographer Clyde Butcher headlining the event. Clyde featured a slideshow and film of his recent photography work out west and in the past week around the Silver River.
Otherwise, for me, the room was filled with many, many friends. Most of my fellow members of the Marion County Historical Commission were there. As were Marion County Commissioner David Moore and his wife, designer and fellow Florida buff Rick Kilby, new vice-manager of Silver River State Park Nicky Aiken, the Ocala Star-Banner photographer who snapped pictures of me a couple days ago, a whole variety of folks from the Springs Alliance and the Springs Festival committees.
It was a great celebration with great food – Especially the grits bar! Looking forward to the “soft” opening of Silver River State Park this coming Tuesday.

February 1st, 2013: Filming How-to-Draw series
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Feb.01, 2013, under Cartooning
Spent the day filming a couple of videos at The Knowledge Exchange in Palm Bay,
The first was for a DVD currently being titled ‘Drawing for 8 and Under’. The photo below shows the drawing on the dry erase board that ends the video.
The second recorded is currently named ‘How-to-Cartoon for 8 and Over’. Above is the photo that wrapped that session. It’s a culmination of answers to questions I posed. The bear looking creature is supposed to be a koala bear, but I didn’t have a photo to work from. All to show the importance of reference.
January 23rd, 2013: Pencil art for Florida beach prints
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jan.23, 2013, under Cartooning, Illusration, Swampy's Florida
Just chug-a-lugged out eleven pencil drawings of a series of beach scenes I’ll be doing later in February.
Stopped for dinner at Ashley’s Restaurant in Rockledge, Florida, for dinner and to get a little work done. Ate a fine prime rib and got the 11 drawings done in two hours and a half!
More to come as I work on each. Suffice it to write that I’ll be using lots of yellow ochre and cerulean blue!
January 9th, 2013 – Florida Artwork in the Process!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Jan.09, 2013, under Cartooning, Illusration, Swampy's Florida
Penciled this during a meeting tonight as I prep for a series of watercolor paintings I need to get done. It’s part of a Swampy’s Florida series that will soon be available to interior designers through a Miami company. There will be two series. One much like this of Florida locations and Florida critters. The other series is of beach scenes around the state.
This is just the pencils of the artwork. Next I prep the art to be watercolored. I’ll be painting the art this Friday during the Art Walk in Downtown Mt. Dora, Florida, at Julianne’s Coastal Cottage store. I’ll be doing it live. If you’re in the area, please come by and say ‘Hello!’.
I did the penciling during a meeting of the Springs Alliance which I’m involved with. Certainly an appropriate time to be working on artwork about the Rainbow River.
This is from a photo taken by a friend of a half fallen cypress tree on the Rainbow River in Marion County, Florida

August 24th, 2012 – Charles Lee watercolor painting.
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Aug.24, 2012, under Caricatures, Cartooning, Illusration
Charles Lee is the director of Advocacy at Audubon of Florida and came to speak at our event at Silver River State Park June 23rd. He spoke about how water is used. About 50% of our water resources in Florida are used to water grass. As Charles points out, grass is just for decoration and yet swallows up so much of our water. Something to add is that the decorative grass is also responsible for the poisons of fertilizer and bug killer being added to the soil that filters it’s way into our Florida water supply. His talk is below and was recorded by Live Oak Production Group.
This is another in a series of five watercolor paintings of speakers from a conference I was involved with this past June 23rd.
