Life coaching caricatures! in Tampa – June 2nd, 2017
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Apr.02, 2017, under Caricatures
A few images of the life coaching caricatures I did at an event Saturday night in Tampa, Florida.
Back in February I figured I’d been posting too many of these event photos and figured I should hold off a bit before posting more. Well, a good 15 events later, here are some more.
The first photo is of Rhoda, who is 3 generations Native Floridian from Tampa in one side of family and 5 generations Native Floridian from around Monticello on the other side. I’m going to help her plan a family reunion near Orlando to see Orange County history and not have folks running off to the kiddie amusement parks.
The next image is of Rhoda’s husband who’s training ng as a boxer includes the 5th Street Gym in Miami. How about that, Tom Orr!
April 3rd, 2013 – Book: ‘De Soto Didn’t Land at Tampa’ by Rolfe F. Schell.

De Soto Didn’t Land At Tampa by Rolfe F. Schell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
‘De Soto Didn’t Land in Tampa’ is a hard book to review without balancing it with other accounts as to just where others think Hernando landed. Author Schell does an outstanding job making his point in under a hundred pages and it would seem he is correct. Punta Gorda sure feels he is with all their recognition of Hernando.
I’ll press on with my reading and have a few texts that have alternate ideas. I might come back and change my rating of the book and this review.
I’m giving this such a high rating because of how thorough Schell has accomplished his goal. The comparative chart of separate diaries of the explorers is very impressive. Schell’s knowledge of Spanish and his translation, further adds to his credibility.
I’m very familiar with the territory of the state that Schell lays out in his narrative as Hernando’s trail. Most all makes sense with the exception of the location of Ocali. Though, I think we may have spent too much time trying to interpret something that is not interpretable. We know names changed over the years and even Schell points out the trouble of multiple names for a single location.
Nevertheless, Schell’s effort in this book is impressive and I recommend it for those who wish to chase this ghost of a mystery.

November 25, 2009 – Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Nov.25, 2009, under Florida Restaurants, What's New?
Just found this Tuesday amongst stuf f – I shouldn’t probably say I’m proud of this ribbon, but I am. It was some nearly 30 years ago I got this at a Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour at the University Square Mall in Tampa, Florida. The franchise moved out of Floria in the mid-’80s. The ribbon was given out for eating an enormous amount of ice cream. That was back when I could do it and not gain a single pound.
April 21, 2009 – Eberhart, Halliday and Flynn!
by Rob Smith, Jr. on Apr.22, 2009, under Books
Two more Florida based mysteries read. One of Mignon Eberhart’s Tampa Bay novels and a later Miami-based Mike Shayne mystery. Eberhart writes of a fictious Florida County on the east coast with a pretty good understanding of the area. The Shayne novel is after the actual series by Dave Dresser. This one stays pretty true to the original series, just with curse words. I veered into one of Vince Flynn’s latest, ‘Protect and Defend’. Another good thriller.
March 9 – 11, 2009 – Southwest Florida!

Sandra and I went down to Punta Gorda to review a number of places for one of Sandra’s travel guides. Jennifer Huber, with the visitor bureau was kind enough to meet us for dinner at an interesting Mediterranean restaurant and then to a wonderful 1910 building that houses an ice cream shop, Chubby’s. Above is a sketch of the are underneath the porch of the 1910 structure.
We also covered the new Muscle Car City. It’s a museum of ‘muscle cars’. The most incredible part is that it’s in an old Wal-Mart building. See photos at Genuine Floria, by clicking here.
We later had some excellent seafood at Peace River Seafood and then Sandra and I made a return trip to Chubbys.
Wednesday we started off with breakfast at Brenda’s Restaurant, which also houses the Masons. Brenda lost her original place because of Hurricane Charley in 2004 and the Masons were very kind to let her move in and save her business. Which clearly is a large and loyal one.
Then we continued on to hiking parts of the Babcock Rance. Below is a sketch of what’s left of a tree.
We made our way south out of Charlotte County and stopped in Bradenton and toured Robinson’s Preserve, along Tampa Bay and across from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. Collectively we hiked 7 plus miles. Below is a sketch from there. We had hoped to stop at the infamous Shake Pit, but is had closed early. Instead we took US41 south through Ruskin and Gibsonton, Sun City Center and Tampa. We stopped in Temple Terrace and had some vittles at the Dairy Queen.
